We have read The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins by Barbara Kerley. The author won a Sibert Honor award for great science writing. The book was illustrated by Brian Selznick who won the Caldecott Honor award for these pictures.
Waterhouse Hawkins sketched pictures of dinosuars. He was trying to find out what dinosaurs looked like in the past. He was living in 1853 and dinosaurs weren't around anymore then. He would take the bones he studied and make a model of the iguanodon, a dinosaur that had teeth like an iguana. He signed his name inside the mouth of the iguanodon, B. Waterhouse Hawkins, 1854. The B stood for Benjamin.
We learned that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert saw Waterhouse Hawkins' dinosaurs. They were amazed! After he put the finishing touches on his dinosaurs, they were put in The Crystal Palace at Sydenham Park in London, Europe. He did make dinosaurs for New York City, but goons smashed them and buried the pieces in Central Park.
